I
decided that I might as well leave an entry in the book, so I wrote about
how I was just dayhiking and stopped by for a rest and snack, and to check
out the campsite. I mentioned the views from Mt Garfield and how I enjoyed
seeing the Pemigewasset Wilderness where Muffin and I had hiked and camped
a few weeks prior. I put the logbook back into its pouch, thought about
how the winter would soon be closing in on this little haven with all of
its memories, and not really wanting to leave, put on my pack and headed
back down the trail, stopping only to take a quick picture of some dried
                flowers on their stalks.
               Being
tired, I climbed slowly back up the Garfield Ridge Trail to the junction
with the Garfield Trail. I had to keep calling out to Muffin so she
wouldn’t get too far ahead of me. Once we reached the junction and began
heading back downhill, the going got easier. The rest of the hike down was
fairly uneventful, but as we neared the bottom, the leaves seemed all the
more colorful in the stronger sun of the afternoon.
               Back
in the car, Muffin made herself comfortable in the back seat as we drove
back up the forest road and headed down the highway toward Franconia Notch
and Lincoln. After stopping to get some gas and a snack, we peeked in
                at the Mountain Wanderer
Bookstore, then headed home. It had been a nice
fall day and a not-too-strenuous hike.

            Dried
flowers beside the path in the Garfield Ridge Campsite. It wouldn’t be
long before the winds scattered their seeds and the snows enveloped them
            for the winter. |
